What is Umrah & How to Perform it?
Umrah
is a sacred Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
Unlike Hajj, which is obligatory for financially and physically capable Muslims
at least once in their lifetime, Umrah is a non-mandatory but highly
recommended act of worship. It can be performed at any time of the
year, except during the days of Hajj.
Key Aspects of
Umrah
- Meaning & Significance
- Often called the "lesser
pilgrimage", Umrah is a way to seek forgiveness,
blessings, and spiritual renewal.
- While not compulsory, it holds
great reward in Islam and purifies the soul.
- Rituals of Umrah (Step-by-Step)
- Ihram – Entering a state of purity by wearing
prescribed clothing (two white sheets for men, modest attire for women)
and making the intention (niyyah).
- Tawaf – Circling the Kaaba seven
times in a counter-clockwise direction, starting from the Black Stone
(Hajar al-Aswad).
- Sa’i – Walking seven times between the hills of Safa
and Marwah, commemorating Hajar’s (Hagar’s) search for water for her
son Ismail.
- Halq/Taqsir – Shaving or trimming the hair (for men, shaving
is preferred; women cut a small portion) to complete Umrah.
- Difference Between Umrah & Hajj
- Umrah can be done in a few hours, while Hajj takes
several days and has fixed dates (8th–13th Dhul-Hijjah).
- Hajj is one of the Five
Pillars of Islam, whereas Umrah is Sunnah (recommended but not
obligatory).
- Benefits of Performing Umrah
- Spiritual cleansing – Wipes away sins and brings one closer to
Allah.
- Dua acceptance – Supplications made during Umrah are highly
regarded.
- Visiting the Prophet’s Mosque
(Masjid an-Nabawi) –
Many pilgrims also travel to Madinah to pray and pay respects at the
Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) resting place.
- When to Perform Umrah?
- Any time except the 5 days of
Hajj (8th–12th Dhul-Hijjah).
- Ramadan Umrah is especially virtuous, equated in reward to
performing Hajj with the Prophet (PBUH).
